Risk Disclosure
Important information about using Crumb Bouncer
Last updated: February 6, 2026
Crumb Bouncer cannot guarantee that any restaurant is safe for someone with celiac disease.
Using this tool does not eliminate risk, and you are ultimately responsible for making your own informed decisions about where and what to eat.
What Crumb Bouncer Does
Crumb Bouncer is an informational tool designed to help people with celiac disease navigate restaurant dining more confidently. It provides:
- Conversation frameworks — Suggested ways to start conversations with restaurant staff
- Cuisine-specific questions — Questions tailored to different types of restaurants and dishes
- Context about risks — Information about where cross-contact commonly occurs in different cooking styles
- Menu guidance — General patterns about which menu items tend to be safer or riskier
This guidance is based on years of firsthand experience navigating restaurant dining with celiac disease, combined with knowledge of how different cuisines typically use gluten.
What Crumb Bouncer Cannot Do
Crumb Bouncer cannot:
- Guarantee safety — No tool, app, or certification can guarantee a restaurant is safe for someone with celiac disease
- Inspect kitchens — We don't visit restaurants, audit their practices, or certify their protocols
- Account for all variables — Kitchen practices vary by location, day, time, and staff on duty
- Replace medical advice — This is not medical advice and should not replace consultation with your doctor or dietitian
- Make decisions for you — You must evaluate the answers you receive and decide whether you trust a specific restaurant on a specific day
Known Limitations
Restaurant variability: Even restaurants with excellent gluten-free protocols can have lapses. Staff training changes. Kitchen conditions vary. Busy service creates shortcuts. What's true on Tuesday may not be true on Saturday night.
Human error: Mistakes happen in even the best kitchens. Staff may forget to change gloves, use the wrong ingredient, or misunderstand the severity of celiac disease. Cross-contact can occur at any step from storage through plating.
Information accuracy: The guidance provided reflects general patterns and common practices, but individual restaurants may operate differently. Always verify information directly with restaurant staff.
Coverage gaps: Crumb Bouncer may not cover every cuisine, dish, or dining situation. If guidance isn't available for your specific situation, that doesn't mean the restaurant is unsafe—it just means you'll need to evaluate it without this tool's assistance.
Your Responsibility
When using Crumb Bouncer, you are responsible for:
- Asking questions — Actually having the conversations with restaurant staff, not just reading the guidance
- Evaluating answers — Assessing whether the restaurant's responses indicate they understand and can handle your needs
- Making decisions — Deciding whether to eat at a restaurant based on your own risk tolerance and the information you receive
- Trusting your gut — Walking away if something doesn't feel right, even if a restaurant says they can accommodate you
- Seeking medical care — Consulting with your doctor about any health concerns or reactions
Crumb Bouncer is a tool to support your decision-making, not a substitute for your judgment.
